Starting a small business with family - with husband, children, or relatives can be a unique challenge. On the other hand, it is also very helpful for business confidence and a good way to invite all family members together for the next generation of security.
The main advantages of running a family business is the trust that is not obtained from the business that is not family oriented. Because of the trust and the relationship this family, family members can work harder and do not require legal contracts and other issues related to the employee. Another advantage is that, regardless of the number of arguments, the family has a tendency to stick together in hard times. This is because each member has a better understanding of other family members, and have an argument, cooperation, and negative experiences together.
Apart from all the advantages having a family business, there are several things to note:
1. Mixing business with personal and family matters can be a negative impact on family relationships. Make sure you make the boundaries clear about where and when you can talk about business.
2. Ensure that communication is not an obstacle. Hold regular meetings to discuss progress and differences of opinion.
3. Treat the family business as it should. Problems that often occur in the family business was too focused on ‘family’ rather than business.
4. Make sure that everyone has a clear role. This will help to grow the business environment.
5. Family members who are in the business should be treated fairly. There should be no favoritism in the business. Salaries and benefits can be just a good starting point.
6. Try to develop a replacement plan. Who will take over the business after you retire? For example, if your child’s brother or your child? This is the assumption that your brother and you have ownership of the company’s shares.
7. If your child will join the business, they try to get experience outside the family business for 3-5 years before they joined. This will give them a perspective or view of how valuable the business should be conducted outside the family setting.
